<h2 style="text-align: left;">
OnePlus 7 Pro How to Enable Hidden VoLTE and VoWiFi</h2>
Here in the UK, I've been aware that my mobile phone provider, Vodafone, supports <a href="https://support.vodafone.co.uk/Using-our-network/Vodafone-4G-Calling/" target="_blank">Voice over 4G (VoLTE)</a> and also <a href="https://www.vodafone.co.uk/network/calling-features/wi-fi-calling" target="_blank">Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi)</a>.<br />
<br />
Both of these technologies are interesting because they allow you to call on your mobile in different ways.<br />
<br />
A solution for Vodafone UK customers was to buy a <a href="https://www.vodafone.co.uk/network/calling-features/sure-signal" target="_blank">Vodafone Sure Signal</a>. These are interesting devices because they use a little bit of your broadband bandwidth to mostly fill your home with a 3G signal. As great as that seems, there are a few problems however:<br />
<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li>They run bloody hot</li>
<li>You have to register each Vodafone number one by one to allow them to be recognised</li>
<li>If you have used a PAC to port your old mobile number from another network, the online MyVodafone app will usually tell you that this is not a Vodafone number. To be fair, a call to Vodafone can normally fix this as long as you wait a few hours</li>
<li>If you have a problem, a call to Vodafone gets you the help of a low paid helpdesk person who is just reading from a script. After trying to explain your problem, they invariably come back with the "I've reset it and it could take up to 6 hours to come back online"</li>
<li>They are quite expensive, especially as you are buying them for the sole reason to use the mobile phone network you are already paying for....</li>
</ol>
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
VoLTE</h2>
4G does not carry voice communications natively; it is just a higher speed data service. On a normal 4G mobile when you either place or receive a phone call, the phone will switch out of 4G and drop back into 3G. Have you ever noticed your signal level change when you are on a call? This is because your mobile changes to a different mode and quite possibly a different frequency when a call is initiated.<br />
<br />
In the past this was significant because there were fewer 4G capable mobile phone masks than there were 3G masks. In fact during a call you would find the signal level jumping a few bars higher. Additionally, since 4G (or LTE as it's also known) is on a completely different frequency, this can be a big factor too.<br />
<br />
Nowadays signal strength is not too significant because most celular masks are now all 4G capable. However, as 4G is a higher bandwidth than 3G, it makes sense to add VOIP capabilities to a 4G cell; this is termed VoLTE.<br />
<br />
Since the Operating System of Apple phones is stable and the same, if you are an owner of one of these devices you can hunt through the menus and enable VoLTE there.<br />
<br />
Android, however, has many different flavours and most providers have not got round to certifying the many different handsets - therefore VoLTE is probably missing. Frustratingly the OnePlus 7 Pro (and most others) fall into this category. But don't worry, if you're brave you can switch it on! 😁<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
VoWiFi</h2>
<div>
If you're in the countryside or even have a house constructed using modern insulation, you probably get a somewhat sketchy signal indoors. Generally, the quality of the voice reception can cut in and out. Fear not, you can switch your phone to allow Voice over WiFi and still use your phone as if you lived next door to a mobile phone mast even if you have no signal.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The same situation arises like above, you should be OK if you've got an Apple phone but an Android phone usually needs to have been bought from the mobile operator themselves.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
However, you can switch-on WiFi calling in your Oneplus 7 Pro... hoorah! 😊<br />
<br />
A chap on another forum explained all this as:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div class="comment-author vcard" style="background-color: #ccdfcb; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">
<cite class="fn" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Simon Farnsworth</cite> <span class="says" style="box-sizing: inherit;">says:</span></div>
<div class="comment-meta commentmetadata" style="background-color: #ccdfcb; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">
<a href="https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2018/08/enabling-voice-over-wifi-on-the-oneplus-5t-and-three-uk/#comment-63432" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: inherit; color: #003366;">2018-10-09 at 14:44</a></div>
<div style="background-color: #ccdfcb; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">
If VoWiFi works, and the handset does VoLTE on networks that support it, you want to turn VoLTE on, too - assuming that the handset and network actually implement the standards properly, support for VoLTE will give you seamless call hand-off between WiFi and 4G (LTE) mobile networks, plus calling on 4G with seamless fallback to 3G/2G as appropriate (and fall-forward to 4G when in coverage), plus audibly glitchy handoff between WiFi and 3G/2G networks.</div>
<div style="background-color: #ccdfcb; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">
On its own, this gives you better chances of sustaining a voice call; further, there's optional components to the spec that, if implemented at both ends, will give you seamless handoff between WiFi and 3G networks for voice calls, meaning that you can keep a voice call going until you lose coverage.</div>
<div style="background-color: #ccdfcb; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">
For the nerds among us; VoWiFi and VoLTE are the same thing on different radio networks (both are SIP + RTP talking to the network operator's IMS service). In VoLTE, the IP packets are carried over LTE directly to your network; in VoWiFi, your phone establishes an IPSec tunnel to a well-known DNS name (epdg.epc.mncXXX.mccYYY.pub.3gppnetwork.org, where XXX is the three digit MNC, add a leading zero if you have a 2 digit MNC like 30, and YYY is the MCC, such as 234 for the UK).</div>
<div style="background-color: #ccdfcb; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">
There's specified handovers to cleanly (no glitches) hand over the IP packets between radio types, and to switch from IP to circuit-switched voice if on the mobile network. There's also specified hand overs for IP to circuit-switched if not carrying IP over the mobile network (which are allowed to glitch), and an optional spec for carrying the IP packets over UMTS/HSPA instead of LTE.</div>
</blockquote>
</div>
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
Secret Sauce</h2>
<div>
There are a lot of of discussions about enabling VoLTE and VoWiFi over the internet but when you dial<b> *#800#</b> to access the secret OnePlus Logkit program menu on your OnePlus 7 Pro, excitement soon turns to disappointment when after navigating the menus, lands you to the set-up page where VoLTE and VoWiFi are not there.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After having thoughts about going through the pain of rooting my brand new phone, I came across this site <a href="https://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-enable-volte-and-vowifi-on-oneplus-7-pro/" target="_blank">here</a>. You need to replace the factory supplied Logkit with a new version - it's actually called</div>

The good news is, this is very easy. Just head on down to <a href="https://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-enable-volte-and-vowifi-on-oneplus-7-pro/" target="_blank">https://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-enable-volte-and-vowifi-on-oneplus-7-pro/</a></div>

<h2 style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">FTTP/ FTTH Installation With Zen Internet</span></h2>
<div>
I live in the countryside and was quite jealous of hearing about people getting access to FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet). A few years back my local exchange was upgraded to FTTC and I thought "excellent" - now I could at last get an internet connection greater than the ~3Mbps I was getting with ADSL Max.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKr-yUJ3ezGKxYMxKhdhuliBHTOlaQ2G8xIOU2xBtJZi4kMseLlzBstjWv5-M-8mkZsCR0c-b1mW8Q6-kytC9Gh1dqdtExjiZ-ctVFd2NuS7lfv5Kw6cGNws3b7k1i8GTvDgLgrNt8P_Wj/s1600/FTTP+Speed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="100" data-original-width="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKr-yUJ3ezGKxYMxKhdhuliBHTOlaQ2G8xIOU2xBtJZi4kMseLlzBstjWv5-M-8mkZsCR0c-b1mW8Q6-kytC9Gh1dqdtExjiZ-ctVFd2NuS7lfv5Kw6cGNws3b7k1i8GTvDgLgrNt8P_Wj/s1600/FTTP+Speed.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is here just to show up on the searches</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
FTTC</h3>
<div>
I saw BT Openreach contractors digging up the main roads and installing fibre to my local exchange in Prestbury, UK. After it finally went live, I did an availability check and my heart sank. I researched the technology and saw that over long line distances FTTC is worse than ADSL Max - Prestbury exchange is over 2km down the road.</div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
VISPA</h3>
<div>
A year or so later, a new up and coming company arrived promising 50Mbs speeds for £38 per month via wireless broadband and they were called <a href="http://www.vispa.net/" target="_blank">VISPA</a>. Vispa is based near Manchester Airport (if you can see the airport's control tower, you're in luck) and works by installing wireless repeaters at various properties to allow residents nearby to connect to their internet. So suddenly, after a small 5GHz Ubiquiti dish was installed on the side of my house and pointed at a local repeater, I had 50mbps internet! Yey! 😃 I could also now save a bit of money and completely discontinue my analogue phone service and move completely over to VOIP. Unfortunately I had to say goodbye to Zen Internet because VISPA are their own ISP.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The only downside I had with the wireless VISPA service is that the internet is now dependant on the local mains power supply at each of the repeater points along the chain. Additionally, when the repeaters power back up, they do a spectrum search in the 5Ghz band before trying to reconnect again - this takes around 5 to 10 minutes to complete. Being in the countryside with overhead 11kv power lines, even a small power glitch can cause a large internet outage and some frustration, especially if you were in the middle of doing something.</div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
What's This?</h3>
<div>
Miracuously, around summer 2017, the vans of BT Openreach were in my area installing a fibre-optic network. Hmmmm! I do feel sorry for these guys because even though my property is fed via overhead phone lines, there is a lot of underground cabling fed through very old collapsed ducting. And here is the crunch, if the underground team cannot pull the new fibre cabling through a section of ducting, they have to hand it over to another civil team who then have to go through all of the permissions to erect traffic lights and carry out groundworks to install new ducting. Once the new ducting is installed, this is then passed back to the cable pulling team who then get another chance to try again.</div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Hello FTTP</h3>
<div>
This process took approximately (an agonising) 18 months to complete 😳! But, returning home from work in February 2019 I saw a BT Openreach man walking outside of my house with a measuring wheel. He was there to do a quick survey (i.e. are the telegraph poles high enough, etc) and to sign off availability of the fibre network. That Friday I did a search on the BT Openreach website and my area was ready for fibre broadband! 😁</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Interestingly, the only providers given (April 2019) were BT and Zen Internet. I have been using Zen Internet since the early days of the internet (approximately 1997) and have also used BT. Out of the two, Zen gets my vote every time because of local call centres and that you just knew that they knew what they were doing rather than just reading from a script.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Full fibre is referred to as FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) or more recently as FTTH (Fibre To The Home) to make it sound more residential. Zen offer two FTTP broadband packages 150Mbps for £50 per month and 300Mbps for £75 per month. Both services are unlimited but I chose to save a bit of money and go for the 150Mbps service. Interestingly, Zen also offer their POT (Plain Old Telephone Service) as an extra but since I already have a VOIP number I chose not to have that (also it's not like ADSL where you have to have a phone number because ADSL sits on top), although it is automatically enabled when you order.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
From booking the service to having an appointment booked takes approximately 3 weeks. On the day of installation, two Openreach guys turned up mainly because one was being re-trained to install FTTP. The installation is interesting because they swap your POTS drop-wire to your property with a dual analogue/fibre figure of 8 cable. The cable comes on a reel with one end already made up with a Fibre-Optic connector; this is the end that gets connected up first at the pole end.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The other end (obviously) runs to your house and can go wherever you wish. Make sure there is a power socket available nearby because the Fibre-Optic termination unit (Optical Network Termination device) needs to be plugged into the mains. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfVQAqDRuNtPx-4c4i4ueQfi1OM18u7NDDHJ4SE_AHfoNT7sR04SYaySWG2ZNp7Yuyi1KSCVU6lIk4g5_TyQLGdNqMiBQL3vznANWDBqB2HV5Si6Vnz0OLghxfBm1eTeR-ym-7JoJkXhWe/s1600/Fibre+Hole+In+Wall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfVQAqDRuNtPx-4c4i4ueQfi1OM18u7NDDHJ4SE_AHfoNT7sR04SYaySWG2ZNp7Yuyi1KSCVU6lIk4g5_TyQLGdNqMiBQL3vznANWDBqB2HV5Si6Vnz0OLghxfBm1eTeR-ym-7JoJkXhWe/s320/Fibre+Hole+In+Wall.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There is a rechargeable NiCad battery also supplied with this unit but I think most people will not have their computer equipment connected to an UPS so therefore their kit will power down during a powercut (unless you're like me and happen to have an UPS too).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Openreach installer will drill through your outside wall, drill your inside wall to mount the termination equipment called the Optical Network Termination device (ONT) and then make-off the Fibre-Optic end to attach. They then plug in a short standard ethernet cable, close the lid and then you're done. Finally, after a Fibre-Optic strength check, the will plug in your router and confirm the installation is up and running.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Zen supply a <a href="https://en.avm.de/products/fritzbox/fritzbox-7530/" target="_blank">Fritz!Box 7530</a> router to connect to the Huawei EchoLife. This is quite an impressive router because it's got gigabit ports, VOIP (Voice Over IP) capability (complete with an analogue telephone port) and can also act as a DECT Base Station for your wireless phones. The on board Wi-Fi can also be made part of a MESH network too.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
However, being a bit of a geek, I have already got a LinkSys WRT1900ACS router with the latest build of OpenWRT installed. I like this alot because it's regularly updated, fast and can be enhanced with add-on software modules relatively easily.</div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
VOIP</h3>
<div>
For VOIP, I have an account with <a href="https://app.sipgatebasic.co.uk/" target="_blank">Sipgate </a>which is quite nice because setup-up is free and they allow you to choose from a dropdown list of available numbers in an area of your choice. For emergency use, you have to prove where you live so that emergency numbers such as 999 or 112 can be used. They have a nice internet web interface and also allow you to pick extras such as Caller-ID and an answer phone service free of charge. For a small cost, you can either add credit or opt for one of their monthly call packages for those of you who still like to use landlines. Oh, credit doesn't expire too!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To incorporate VOIP into the house wiring, I opted for a <a href="http://www.grandstream.com/products/gateways-and-atas/analog-telephone-adaptors/product/ht802" target="_blank">GrandStream HT802</a> which is an impressive piece of kit. It has a web interface which allows you to enter your VOIP account details (along with a million other settings, should you so wish).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Note that eventually the whole of the country will have their POTS service converted to use VOIP. In fact, the Fibre Optic terminating unit that Openreach install already has an analogue port on it, ready for the inevitable switch-over in the future.</div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Is it any good?</h3>
<div>
My OpenWrt setup also runs a QOS addon (Quality of Service) which limits the upload speed to play nicely with the VOIP modem. Heading over to Broadband Speed Checker yielded these results:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKr-yUJ3ezGKxYMxKhdhuliBHTOlaQ2G8xIOU2xBtJZi4kMseLlzBstjWv5-M-8mkZsCR0c-b1mW8Q6-kytC9Gh1dqdtExjiZ-ctVFd2NuS7lfv5Kw6cGNws3b7k1i8GTvDgLgrNt8P_Wj/s1600/FTTP+Speed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="100" data-original-width="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKr-yUJ3ezGKxYMxKhdhuliBHTOlaQ2G8xIOU2xBtJZi4kMseLlzBstjWv5-M-8mkZsCR0c-b1mW8Q6-kytC9Gh1dqdtExjiZ-ctVFd2NuS7lfv5Kw6cGNws3b7k1i8GTvDgLgrNt8P_Wj/s1600/FTTP+Speed.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Of real interest here but not shown on this screenshot is the ping time. Regardless of the internet bandwidth you have got, the line latency is really important and needs to be as low as possible. This is what Zen Internet excel at and mine is currently a very respectable 15ms.</div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Final Thoughts</h3>
<div>
The UK Government has committed to switching off the analogue phone service (POTS) and replacing it by FTTP/FTTH within the next several years. This is a massive job, just to get our house fit for fibre optic took over 18 months with a lot of civil works and road closures - all for overhead phone lines. Because of this, I think Openreach are concentrating on the areas that have really poor ADSL firstly as they train up an army of installation engineers.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you already have FTTC and are above the USO (Universal Service Obligation) which is currently defined as "<a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-42423047" target="_blank">the whole of the UK will have access to speeds of at least 10 Mbps by 2020</a>" then I strongly think that you will have to wait a lot longer because there is a lot of catching up to be done.</div>
<div>

I use a small piece of excellent software to deal with the licensing within ECUFix. Up until now, various Anti-Virus programs have been flagging ECUFix as having a trojan. The security code creator has been hard at work to try and find a solution to this and I think he's succeeded!<br />

I did an update of my Windows Server 2012 R2 with new versions of PHP (v.7.1.11) and ZenCart v1.56-Alpha.<br />
<br />
A day ago I happened to login to the store admin area and noted there were 3 orders waiting to be dispatched but I was not notified.... oh dear.<br />
<br />
Logging into the server via RDP and looking at the logs directory, showed me that I had a few<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"SSL operation failed with code 1. OpenSSL Error"</blockquote>
<br />
and<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Email Error: SMTP connect() failed. https://github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer/wiki/Troubleshooting<br />
in C:\Domains\ecufix.com\wwwroot\shop\includes\functions\functions_email.php on line 375"</blockquote>
<br />
Errors meaning that the emails were not being sent - double oh dear. To check, I logged into the ZenCart Admin console and altered the PayPal module settings and then a red banner appeared at the top of the browser telling me that there was an email sending error.<br />
<br />
So something had changed either in PHP or ZenCart since the last time I used it. I know the ZenCart developers would never have let their code out of the door with a simple email bug. Therefore the error had to be related to PHP.<br />
<br />
After a few hours of searching, I found the reason why emails were failing: essentially PHP now requires the CaCerts (Certificate Authority Certificates) defining in the OpenSSL section as well.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<br />
[curl]<br />
; A default value for the CURLOPT_CAINFO option. This is required to be an<br />
; absolute path.<br />
curl.cainfo = "C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\v7.1\Extras\SSL\cacert.pem"<br />
[openssl]<br />
; The location of a Certificate Authority (CA) file on the local filesystem<br />
; to use when verifying the identity of SSL/TLS peers. Most users should<br />
; not specify a value for this directive as PHP will attempt to use the<br />
; OS-managed cert stores in its absence. If specified, this value may still<br />
; be overridden on a per-stream basis via the "cafile" SSL stream context<br />
; option.<br />
openssl.cafile= "C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\v7.1\Extras\SSL\cacert.pem"</blockquote>
<br />
This allows the emails to be sent again.<br />
<br />

I had a OnePlus 2 mobile phone here in the UK.<br />
<br />
I really liked it but my Vodafone SIM wouldn't let me send SMS texts out. Since it's a dual SIM phone, I tried an EE SIM in the other slot and this worked fine.<br />
<br />
Sending texts didn't really bother me much and, at the time in June 2017, the OnePlus 5 was due to be released so I wasn't much bothered.<br />

OnePlus 5 in my hands and everything swapped over I randomly tried to send an SMS a few days later.... it failed with the error message "Could not send text Error 38"..... hmm, not good. I telephoned Vodafone and spent about 45 minutes on the phone with the technical chap. We tried all-sorts including disabling and re-enabling SMS from the Vodafone system app but all to no-avail. Then I found an article about a similar problem on the OnePlus 3T forums and thought I'd give it a go....<br />
<br />
There's a (not so) secret menu available for Android phones that's accessed by typing *#*#4636#*#* from your phone's dialer. As soon as you enter the last "*", a menu pops up labelled "Testing".<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

In my phone, the SMSC: field was blank. The message centre for Vodafone UK is +447785016005 which needs to be added here. To add it, you must put the number in double quotes and then tap on the UPDATE button, e.g. "+447785016005" - tap UPDATE.</div>

Sending a test SMS to myself succeeded!</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
P.S. don't go changing anything else or you'll probably do more damage unless you know what you're doing. Ironically, if you know what you're doing, you wouldn't be here anyway 😃</blockquote>
Hope this helps someone, Andy</div>

Probably should have gone up a slightly higher version number this time because of the work I had to put into this.<br />

<br />
I've added two extra binaries for US/Canada VW Rabbits (Golfs), both Normally Aspirated (NA) which took some doing! 360930 and 372644<br />
<br />
If you would like to give it a try, the new version can be downloaded direct from <a href="https://www.ecufix.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=180" style="background-color: white; color: #888888; display: inline; outline: none; text-decoration-line: none; transition: 0.3s;" target="_blank">ECUFix's product page</a> or from the download directory <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8IuVN06cVhedTA2dWpQVmY0akk" style="background-color: white; color: #888888; display: inline; outline: none; text-decoration-line: none; transition: 0.3s;" target="_blank">HERE</a><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">.</span></span><br />
<br />
However, over the past month or so, I updated my development environment to Visual Studio 2017 and all seemed well except I noticed some unusual behaviour only after the project was compiled into Release mode.<br />
<br />
The bug? Well to make things try and autocomplete as much as possible, I have a small routine to try and search for a string of bytes in a binary. A snippet follows <a href="http://hilite.me/" target="_blank">(Thanks to http://hilite.me/)</a><br />

<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Got a VOIP modem with an RJ11 socket?</span></h2>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">If you are lucky enough to have either a wireless or cable connection to the internet, you can almost undoubtedly save money on line-rental by getting rid of your landline and move over to VOIP instead.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">However, in the UK we have BT 431A plugs and most modems/adapters have RJ11 sockets on them. Therefore an adapter is needed but which one?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">STOP Press - <a href="http://blog.frankleonhardt.com/2012/voip-socket-pinout-on-newer-draytek-routers-2820vn-etc/" target="_blank">I found this useful post here</a> - It shows us that the middle two pins (3 and 4) are line 1 and the next two pins (2 and 5) are line 2.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Speaking from my experience with my Draytek 2820Vn router you need to choose a crossover type. The information about how to connect a BT designed device to these things is difficult to find, mainly because you don't know what to type into the Google search box!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Useful information I found is available to browse <a href="http://www.wppltd.demon.co.uk/WPP/Wiring/UK_telephone/uk_telephone.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>, with the most important paragraph being the last one. It states that pins 2 and 3 of the RJ11 plug need to be crossed-over to connect to pins 3 and 2 of the BT plug/socket. Similarly, pins 4 and 5 need to be crossed-over and connected to pins 5 and 4 of the BT plug/socket.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">To quote the web-site: <i><b>"</b></i></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , "times newroman";"><i><b>NORMALLY the center two pins on the RJ11 are connected to the outer two (2 and 5) at the BT end. No matter what coloured wire is used the two wires always go to pins 2 and 5 at the BT end however it isn't safe to assume they ALWAYS go to the center two at the RJ11 end."</b></i></span><br />

Found a backup from August 2015 which has now been loaded but what a mess! AGH!<br />

<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://www.ecufix.com/shop/" target="_blank">ECUFix Has Got a Responsive Theme</a></h2>
<div>
This has been bugging me for a while. I use my android mobile more and more nowadays but when I browse my <a href="https://www.ecufix.com/shop/" target="_blank">own site,</a> it looks a little bit cramped because it's just the standard desktop theme.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, off to look around and I found a nice freeware theme for <a href="https://www.zen-cart.com/" target="_blank">Zen Cart</a> from a company called <span style="background-color: #f9f9f9; color: #444444; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><a href="http://picaflor-azul.com/">Picaflor-Azul.com</a>. The theme in question is </span><a href="https://www.picaflor-azul.com/responsive-sheffield-blue-free-zen-cart-template" target="_blank">Responsive Sheffield Blue</a>. These are called responsive themes because they have the ability to react to differing resolutions of different client devices.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Getting a new theme up and running on an existing store can be quite troublesome. I found the best way to do this was to copy the store's database onto my own computer, install ZenCart locally and run a mirror of <a href="https://www.ecufix.com/shop/" target="_blank">ECUFix</a>. This way you can get to know the feel of how the site will look and behave. The only downside I experienced was resetting the side boxes (these settings are not readily portable) and getting the payment modules to work (these have to be deleted and reinstalled again).</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There remain a few odd issues that need ironing out but I hope it will open up potential customers to me.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

I have a Windows 2012 R2 Server that used to have two NICs installed (Network Interfaces). One was my home IP Address of 192.168.3.3 and the other was 192.168.1.3 which is used to host a separate network which has my IP Cameras installed.<br />
<br />
Recently my home server went TITSUP<span style="font-size: xx-small;">*</span>, so I replaced the motherboard with a simple MSI one which only had a single NIC. No problem, I put both networks onto the same network through a switch and assigned two IP Addresses to the NIC (multi-homed).<br />
<br />
The reason I have two IP Addresses is to separate the two networks (obviously) but more importantly the second Network (with its IP Address) actually leaves the house and connects to the IP Cameras. If some miscreant were to obtain access to that cable, he would have access to my internet lovely stuff, therefore that network is configured to restrict that.<br />
<br />
OK, the problem I had was that the server was returning the 192.168.1.3 address when it was pinged with the server's name. This then stopped my internal computers from accessing the server via the GUI unless 192.168.3.3 was used instead.<br />
<br />
The solution was to use Windows PowerShell and make sure the second address (and probably any more IPs you have) have the SkipAsSource flag set.<br />
<br />
You do this by removing the second IP by using the GUI. Starting PowerShell and then run the following commands (note that nothing in windows is case-sensitive. Capitalisation serves to make the commands clearer to read:<br />
<br />
<b style="background-color: white; color: #6a6a6a; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;">Get-NetIPAddress <- To find the names (aliases) of the installed adapters ["Ethernet" in my case]</b><br />
<b style="background-color: white; color: #6a6a6a; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><br /></b>
<b style="color: #6a6a6a; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;">Set-NetIPAddress -IPAddress 192.168.1.3 -InterfaceAlias "Ethernet" -PrefixLength 24 -SkipAsSource $True</b><br />
<br />
After this, the correct IP will be reported to a Ping....<br />
<br />
Note, if you use the GUI again, the SkipAsSource flag will be reset to false.<br />
<br />

My little MY2009 VW Golf Mk6 1.6 TDI is a little slow but it's economical and does me just fine.<br />

However, a few months ago it started to misbehave. It suddenly wouldn't want to accelerate up hills, up to the point I was actually flashed by a taxis driver - embarrassing!<br />

I lifted the bonnet (hood) and put a vacuum pump on the actuator (where the wastegate would normally be) thinking it was sticking but everything seemed to be OK mechanically.<br />

You see, most modern turbocharged vehicles have <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable-geometry_turbocharger" target="_blank">variable vane </a>boost control to alter the characteristics of the turbo, this is instead of directly controlling the boost pressure in the traditional way by bleeding off the wastegate back-pressure to control the boost. The net advantage of this is to provide a nice engine torque-curve (by controlling the aspect ratio of the turbo) coupled with greater fuel economy and lower emissions - a bit of a win-win.<br />
<br />
However, these are mechanical systems and at the end of the day sometime or other they will break. The most common complaint is a build-up of carbon on the vane assembly itself causing it to stick or seize and gradually turn your car into a pig. Instructions how to free them can be found all over Youtube, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6b1R0k9BFE" target="_blank">an example of one such procedure can be found here using Sodium Hydroxide Foaming Oven Cleaner.</a> Not in our case though, the vacuum pump showed that the vanes were moving, so they probably weren't stuck.<br />
<br />
Connecting VCDS up revealed chaos in the ECU's DTC error table. Manufacturers try and make things easy for their service mechanics by getting the ECU to tell them what's wrong. However, if you have a mechanical fault, all that happens is the ECU starts telling you a whole host of errors (open collector fault, blah, blah) - In fact, the only error it didn't say was "Replace Whole Engine!".<br />
<br />
I kept driving the car in it's "simulated full-race state of tune" for a month or so to convince myself what was going on. Googling around the various forums (carefully filtering out the BS that people seem to be good at saying), I was convinced that the Actuator Valve was not working and the Variable Vanes were randomly stuck in various positions.<br />
<br />
I would not have been too bothered about this particular fault but the car was so laggy to get moving, it was damn-right dangerous to attempt to pull out of junctions. I'm sure other motorists must-have thought I was doing it deliberately because they saw me pull out in front of them, stop and then after several seconds suddenly accelerate away! Additionally, the fuel economy was absolutely terrible....<br />
<br />
A quick Google search and trawl through eBay led me to CarPartsLink Ltd - Mike. The trick is to search for your engine code (CAY in my case) and include the words "turbo actuator". He was the cheapest on eBay and after a quick phone-call, he confirmed his part would fit and turned out to be a nice chap.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The old Turbo Actuator</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
A couple of days later it was in my hands and ready to fit. Fitting is quite straight-forward and can be done in a couple of hours with the turbo still attached to the engine.<br />
<br />
Firstly un-clip the top engine cover, then remove the undertray of the engine because you will drop something! Secondly, remove the turbo inlet hose and the connector to the Turbo Actuator. You should now have a clear view of the turbo and Actuator.<br />

</tbody></table>
On the underside of the actuator there are three 10mm nuts, remove them to loosen the bracket we've just removed. The purpose of this is to allow us to gain access to the actuator rod where it is connected to the actuator on the turbo.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2Vf9Gp8mKsg/VZfaPU_UqvI/AAAAAAAAAsE/I1BWRqoUQJg/s1600/20150703_114804.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2Vf9Gp8mKsg/VZfaPU_UqvI/AAAAAAAAAsE/I1BWRqoUQJg/s640/20150703_114804.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">You can just see the rod-actuator connected to the turbo's actuator.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The trickiest bit of the whole procedure is to disconnect the actuator rod. It's held in place by a circlip that needs to be removed. We can do this by modifying a pick so it looks like this:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AHkRZirPUgA/VZlNlN0wnZI/AAAAAAAAAuk/RoR7g41Wm3A/s1600/20150703_132648.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AHkRZirPUgA/VZlNlN0wnZI/AAAAAAAAAuk/RoR7g41Wm3A/s640/20150703_132648.jpg" width="360" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A modified Pick to remove the Actuator Circlip.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There should be just enough room to get the pick into the gap and flick the circlip off. Usually, it's about this time you realise you should have removed the undertray! All being well, assembly is just the reversal of removal. Once everything's in place, you can marvel at your hardwork...<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">And your work from this angle!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Testing can be a little fraut and frustrating because you have to remember that while this fault was going on, the ECU has been attempting to bring the boost pressure back to normal. This will mean the car will seem very flat to drive and not wanting to rev at all. You should attempt to try a few gentle standing starts and back to stop again. Additionally, gently accelerating in second gear from 1,000 RPM to 3,000 RPM will slowly teach the ECU the correct parameters.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Good luck and I hope this helps somebody. Andy</div>

My wife passed away after her long battle with cancer on Sunday, 12th October 2014. This is why I have not been very publically active for the past 6 months.<br />
<br />
However, behind the scenes I've been fairly busy updating ECUFix. Because I was running out of version numbers during version 5, I've bumped up the version number to v6 so that I can carry on updating support for new binaries..<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, I am working on a new online licensing system which should make obtaining new licenses even more convenient than they are now.<br />

I am falling in love with Windows 8.1 but the Remote Desktop is extremely frustrating; it regularly drops the connection and makes remote administration horrible.<br />

On Windows 7 my remote administration worked but from Windows 8 onwards, it wouldn't. Having a look around it appears that Microsoft has tried to reduce the RDP overhead by allowing UDP packets when the connection allows.<br />

How can we force Windows to revert back to TCP? Well, we can use the Local Policy Editor to do just that.<br />
